about

"Before We Speak" is the debut album from Baltimore-based trio: Michaels Weber Kuhl

The creative process in this group draws heavily on our experiences with both straight-ahead jazz and free improvisation, allowing us to address form and harmony, as well as melodic material, with a heightened sense of flow and creativity.

Our collectively loose approach to rhythm and phrasing help us to channel the music through a gamut of expressive territories, from esoteric to overt - subtle to grandiose - contemplative to visceral – romantic to cerebral. We aim to create and consciously sustain an egalitarian creative environment, often circumventing the “Soloist with Rhythm Section” approach to jazz performance, thus bringing a vitality to the music through a fluid continuum of creative control. This is a band of co-leaders – who each maintain equal power to alter the direction of the music at all times.

The album was tracked LIVE, as a continuous set of music. There were no overdubs, no headphones, and no isolation at all. What you hear is what you get – this was very much by design. There is an ambience captured in this recording that contrasts with the results that might have come from isolating each instrument and dialing in every sound with pinpoint precision – this approach feels, to me, a bit more human. The final product is representative of our sound in that room on that particular evening – if you were there, this is what you would have heard.
